How important is it to have responsive design for a design portfolio? The whole point of the portfolio is to showcase images basically, but on a mobile phone for example you can argue that you won't be getting much out such a small screen anyway. And, I think most sites look decent on tablet right?
So, responsive for a site which uses mostly images and minimal to text or not?

I guess it depends who you're trying to impress. Potential employers? Yes, make it responsive. Random people? Maybe -- are mobile users your target audience? If not, then there's really no point. You may just do it for the sake of experience, though.
That being said, it's not enough to make a website simply responsive. There's a lot of optimization that needs to go into it, both on the front end and back end, in order to provide a usable mobile experience. When it comes to browsing on their phones, people will generally close a page if it doesn't load within 3 seconds.
