Similar to how it is on SI right now, this simple layout template will move the sub-boards list into a separate row under the board which they belong to.
First, find this section of code in
Layout Templates > Board > Board List and REMOVE it:
It should be line 26-31 on default template.
{if $[board.sub_board]}
<p class="sub-boards">
Sub-board{if $[board.sub_board] != 1}s{/if}:
{foreach $[board.sub_board]}<a href="$[board.sub_board.href]">$[board.sub_board.name]</a>$[board.sub_board.comma] {/foreach}
</p>
{/if}
Then, scroll down a bit and find this bit of code:
{else}
No posts have been made on this board.
{/if}
</td>
</tr>
And copy & paste this NEW sub-boards code right AFTER the lines above:
{if $[board.sub_board]}
<tr><td colspan="5" class="main">
<p class="sub-boards">
Sub-board{if $[board.sub_board] != 1}s{/if}:
{foreach $[board.sub_board]}<a href="$[board.sub_board.href]">$[board.sub_board.name]</a>$[board.sub_board.comma] {/foreach}
</p>
</td></tr>
{/if}
Save your changes, and voila!

Nice one Smangii, I prefer to see the subs myself so I believe all forums should do this.

SmangiiSame, unless it's just archive boards, but then they can be set to not show, obviously.
Smangii has a girlfriend..
